What Is a Mass Tort?

A mass tort is a civil action in which many people who have been harmed by the same product, drug, or environmental hazard pursue claims through coordinated federal multidistrict litigation (MDL) or state-court consolidation. Unlike a class action (where claims are bundled into a single judgment), each plaintiff in an MDL retains an individual claim with individualized damages.
